91¹ú²úapp's Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) College Program was initiated in 1998 to help prospective law students develop critical thinking skills and study habits and to guide students through the law school application process.  The commitment of the program is to better prepare students to succeed by presenting them with a rigorous workload focusing on the academic thinking skills necessary for the pursuit of a legal education.  The LSPI program:

• Introduces students to legal thought, research and writing
• Develops analytical and critical reading and writing skills
• Develops strategies for becoming a more attractive law school candidate
• Guides students in selecting and applying to law schools
• Gives students the opportunity to speak with law school students and faculty as well as prominent members of the legal community
• Prepares students for the LSAT

The LSPI College Program is open to 91¹ú²úapp undergraduate students of any major.  It is a myth that law schools prefer certain majors over others.  Any major that requires rigorous training and thought is acceptable to law schools.  Perhaps the worst misconception in this matter is that the students majoring in STEM disciplines are not favored by law school admissions committees.  Law schools are keen to admit students with backgrounds in math, engineering, and the sciences.

The LSPI College Program follows a cohort model and extends across four semesters – spring, summer, fall, and another spring.  It is expected that LSPI Scholars will take the actual LSAT exam (in June and again in August, if needed) and apply to law schools in early fall.  It is likewise anticipated that LSPI Scholars will begin law school in the fall semester following their second spring semester in the program.  Notably, there are many activities and opportunities for LSPI Scholars throughout the academic year.  These activities and opportunities include speaker series, field trips, internships, and travel to LSAC law school forums.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, applicants must:

1. Have earned at least 30 college credits upon completion of Fall 2026
2. Be a registered 91¹ú²úapp student in Spring 2027
3. Have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.*

*We consider GPA the same way that law schools do. All grades earned from any institution of higher education for college credit that go toward the first bachelor’s degree will be included in the calculation of the overall GPA. This includes grades from study abroad courses (if a grade was given) and repeated courses. Grades earned in developmental classes or while in high school (dual credit, early college, etc.) are not included in the overall GPA calculation.

SCHEDULE / TIMELINE

Fall 2026

• Apply to the LSPI College Program, including participating in an in-person interview with the admissions committee.
• Applicants will be notified of admissions decisions.

Spring 2027

• LSPI Scholars must register for and take POLS 4325 as one of their courses during the semester.  Students will learn the foundations of deductive logic and reasoning and prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT).

Summer 2027

• LSPI Scholars will take the actual LSAT exam in June and again in August, if needed.
• Two-day Law School Boot Camp in mid-July (dates TBD).
  • Law school representatives will be on campus to visit with students.
  • Workshops on application materials and the LSAC's Credential Assembly Service.

Fall 2027

• LSPI Scholars will apply to law schools.
• LSPI Scholars must also register for and take POLS 4322 as one of their courses during the semester.  Students will learn the foundations of legal reasoning, be introduced to Tort law, and read, analyze, and brief many legal cases.

Spring 2028

• LSPI Scholars must register for and take POLS 4323 as one fo their courses during the semester.  Students will be introduced to legal writing, enhance their legal reasoning skills, and prepare for and participate in a moot court exercise.
• The next cohort of LSPI Scholars will begin by registering for and taking POLS 4325.

Spring 2027: POLS 4325 - Special Topics in Law and Politics
Summer 2027: no registered courses
Fall 2027: POLS 4322 - Legal Reasoning (Tort Law)
Spring 2028: POLS 4323 - Course in Action (Legal Writing)

All three classes count toward the Legal Reasoning minor.

Costs

The cost of the program is the cost of tuition and fees for nine credits (three 3-credit hour courses).  Students can see 91¹ú²úapp’s tuition and fees schedule on the Student Business Services website.

Financial Aid

LSPI courses (POLS 4322, 4323, and 4325) can be covered by financial aid.  Please check with your advisor to see if financial aid will cover these courses in your situation.  There is no separate financial aid specifically for the LSPI courses.

APPLICATION

91¹ú²úapp undergraduate students must apply to the LSPI College Program.

The online application is currently available (click to access the application).  You will be asked to upload a current resume and a writing statement, and you will also need to provide unofficial transcripts from all institutions of higher education from which you earned college credit after high school.  We interview all program applicants.

The application deadline is October 18th.
